Plantar fascia is often a clinically stubborn and troublesome condition. This unique occasion will focus on the treatment and rehabilitation of plantar fascia pain and ruptures.
Each expert will deliver an insightful 15-minute presentation which will encompass a deep dive into their specific areas of expertise. Following the three presentations, we will engage in a dynamic round table discussion with a focus on plantar fascia ruptures and surgical intervention.

Presenters
Nick Kane
Nick is the founder & Managing Director of the Sports MAP Network as well as Head Physiotherapist at Essendon Football Club.
He is a Sports & Exercise Physiotherapist having completed a Masters in Sports Physiotherapy from La Trobe University. He completed is undergraduate Physiotherapy degree at Notre Dame University in Fremantle. Nick excels in working with sporting injuries and rehabilitation with a particular interest in troublesome hip & groin pain, recurrent hamstring injuries, tendon pain & post surgical rehab.
Henrik Riel
Henrik is a physiotherapist from Denmark and has obtained his PhD in the management of plantar heel pain. He is doing a post-doc fellowship at the university of Aalborg and he is an assistant professor at the physio department of the university of northern Denmark
Athol Thomson
Athol Thomson (PhD) is a research scientist and Podiatrist currently examining the interaction between football players’ shoes and the playing surfaces they compete on leading up to the 2022 FIFA World cup In Qatar.
Following on from over 23 years of clinical experience as a Podiatrist working with elite triathlon, track & field, cycling and rugby in Australia, UK and Ireland, Athol now has a split clinical/research role that has led to applied research publications on athlete rehabilitation using Anti-gravity (AlterG) treadmills, stress fractures of the fifth metatarsal in elite football, running after anterior cruciate ligament injury, and the evolution in football boot/playing surface technologies.
Romain Tourillon
Romain Tourillon combines his roles as a sports physiotherapist, researcher and educator through his work with individual athletes at the Swiss Olympic Medical of La Tour Hospital in Geneva (Switzerland). Currently leading the foot-ankle service, he is also involving in a PhD thesis on the role of foot muscles strength in sports performance kinetics under the supervision of JB Morin at the University of Saint-Etienne (France).
Romain actively participates in the representation of the profession on the international level as he’s an active member of the scientific organization : International Ankle Consortium. On a clinical level, Romain completed his MSc in physiotherapy and then undetook his MSc in Training and Sport Performance Optimization in France. He is also a certified Mulligan practitioner (CMP) since 2021. On a scientific level, Romain participated as a speaker in several national and international congress : International Ankle Symposium, French Ankle Symposium, European Congress of Sports Science, etc and has peer-reviewed publications around the thematic of human foot muscles strength.
